Why Does My Vehicle Pull to One Side When Braking?

Understanding Braking Force

Your vehicle should stop in a straight line when the brakes are applied. If it pulls to one side, it's often a sign that the braking system requires professional attention.

Brake pulling commonly occurs when braking force is not being applied evenly across all wheels. This can happen for several reasons.

Uneven brake pad wear is a common cause. If one side of the vehicle has significantly more braking force than the other, the vehicle may drift or pull during stopping.

Other possible causes include:

  • Sticking brake calipers
  • Contaminated brake fluid
  • Damaged brake hoses
  • Uneven rotor wear
  • Suspension issues
  • Tyre-related problems

While some drivers become accustomed to minor pulling, it should never be considered normal. Uneven braking can increase stopping distances and reduce vehicle stability during emergency braking situations.

Brake pulling may become more noticeable during heavy braking, wet weather or highway driving. In severe cases, it can create a genuine safety concern.

Regular brake inspections help identify uneven wear before it develops into a larger problem. Technicians can assess brake pad condition, rotor wear, caliper operation and hydraulic system performance to locate the source of the issue.

If your vehicle consistently pulls to one side while braking, arranging an inspection sooner rather than later can help maintain safe braking performance.
