Why Are My Brakes Making Noise?

Understanding Common Brake Sounds

Most drivers expect their brakes to operate quietly. When unusual noises begin to appear, it's often one of the first signs that something within the braking system requires attention.

A high-pitched squeal is one of the most common brake complaints. Modern brake pads are often fitted with wear indicators designed to produce a warning noise when the friction material becomes worn. This deliberate sound alerts drivers that brake pad replacement may soon be required.

Ignoring brake squealing can allow wear to progress beyond the pads and potentially damage other brake components. What begins as a relatively simple brake pad replacement can become a more expensive repair if left unchecked.

Grinding noises are often more serious. This can occur when brake pads have worn completely through their friction material, allowing metal components to contact the brake rotor. When this happens, braking performance may be reduced while rotor damage becomes increasingly likely.

Brake noises can also be caused by:

  • Glazed brake pads
  • Contaminated brake components
  • Damaged hardware
  • Rotor wear
  • Foreign material trapped in the braking system

While some noises may appear only occasionally, they should still be investigated. Brake problems rarely improve on their own and generally become worse over time.

Drivers in Mulgrave who notice unusual brake sounds should arrange an inspection as soon as possible. Early diagnosis can often prevent more extensive repairs while ensuring the vehicle remains safe to drive.
